Shambala

The Guardian of the North

Here the artist depicts Shambala (Tibetan Bde Byung) a mythical land that can only be found through the appropriate karma.

Shambala is the repository of the kalachakra teaching that was transmitted by the Buddha at the request of his king Suchandra. It is described in the Kalachakra Tantra and its commentaries. According to the 14th Dalai Lama , it is a pure land which, although earthly, cannot be located on a map.

According to the tantra, the 25th king of Shambhala will return to the world to drive out the dark forces and establish a golden age. There is a prayer for rebirth in Shambhala written by the 6th Panchen Lama.
